Extension cords feel like an easy win: plug one in, solve a too-short-cord problem, move on with your day. Electricians, however, tend to view them as a “temporary tool” that many households accidentally turn into a permanent part of the wiring. That mismatch—using a short-term fix as a long-term solution—is why extension cords continue to rank among the most common (and preventable) home electrical mistakes.
The good news is you don’t have to banish extension cords entirely. You just need to use the right cord for the right job, avoid a few risky habits, and know when it’s time to upgrade your outlets instead.
Why extension cords cause problems in everyday homes
Your home’s wiring is designed to carry electricity through conductors that are protected inside walls, routed through approved boxes, and safeguarded by breakers. Extension cords aren’t built for that role. They’re more vulnerable to damage, they can be undersized for the load, and they’re often placed where heat can’t dissipate well (under rugs, behind furniture, or in a tangled pile).
